Board Certification: Does it Matter?

Not all medical certification boards are the same. By law, a medical doctor is free to perform any medical or surgical procedure. That means a brain surgeon can undertake a tummy tuck. The duty falls on the doctor to follow his or her conscience. Boards are loose affiliations of medical professionals that organize together; however, medical boards are self-regulating.

Thus, qualifications and admissions to medical boards are self-determined. What does that mean for you, the patient? Well, you need to be sure that your plastic surgeon is board certified in plastic surgery, and not some other discipline–physicians certified in plastic surgery will tend to be better qualified than doctors certified in, say, podiatry, and vice versa. Next, consider the board itself. There is a national group called the American College of Graduate Medical Education; this organization has undertaken the task of reviewing the policies and performance of medical boards and approves only medical boards that meet the highest standards. The ACGME has approved only one plastic surgery board as worthy of its approval: The American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

And, Dr. Larry Schlesinger is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, learn more about him here.
